The service offers person-centred support to people with dementia to promote individuality and independence and to combat loneliness and isolation.
The service offers daily chair based exercises or tai chi for clients to encourage movement and muscle tone. There is a daily activities rota which clients and anyone from the local community are welcome to join in with, dependent on their interests. The activities include arts and crafts; a games café where table top games such as scrabble; dominoes; cards; and other board games are played. Cooking sessions in the well-equipped kitchen are available. Clients also enjoy singing; large group games such as skittles; golf and cricket; bingo; quizzes and jigsaws. Clients are accompanied to the town market for plants which they plant in the centre’s patio containers.
There are links with the local community through excursions to a garden centre and other local areas of interest, and weekly visits to a church coffee morning. From Monday to Friday a lunch club is provided, and people from the community are invited to join the clients (if booked in advance): this has provided an excellent way to build new friendships.
Services offered are bathing; fingernail cutting; washing and drying of clothes. Foot care and hairdressing can be arranged if required. (These services incur a cost).
On the third Tuesday of the month a ‘My Time’ carers support group is held, in partnership with local GP practices and Dorset County Council: carers’ loved ones are able to join the centre’s activities whilst the carer attends the meeting if required. Staff give support, advice and signposting information to carers on request. The service offers daily respite attendance to support carers.
Shaftesbury Plus is open 9.30 am to 3.30 pm from Monday to Saturday. It is closed on Sundays and on bank holidays.
Various rooms and facilities are available for hire out of hours. Charges are available on request.
