Brionne Visiting the ruined castle
This is an attractive town on the River Risle, a tributary of the Seine, in the heart of Normandy about 25 miles South West of Rouen. It is a town of similar size to Shaftesbury and, like Shaftesbury, is a very old settlement. Its history began well before the Romans and it was a most important place at the time of William the Conqueror. Just outside Brionne is the famous Abbey of Le Bec Hellouin founded in the eleventh century with associations with England. The town has an excellent market on Thursdays and Sundays; good shops, restaurants and hotels; a heated open air swimming pool and a lake for fishing and water sports. It is an excellent centre for a short holiday in Normandy and is only 87 miles from Paris, 37 miles from Deauville and 55 miles from Caen. 30th Anniversary Visit Brionne schoolchildren welcome Shaftesbury Twinners in 2003
